30 September 2009 Daily Inspiration

October Themes Announced!!

This months themes are inspired by the cinema.

Week 1 - Perspective - 1-7 October 2009

The Leaf Perspective

The idea for this week is to get a new perspective on the way that you shoot. To try some new angles and see the result! The above image is an example from the Shutter Sisters website on shooting from a new perspective.

You could go HIGH, LOW, SIDEWAYS or just imagine yourself as another creature or object as with The Leaf Perspective.

Week 2 - Technicolor - 8 - 14 October 2009

The Wizard of Oz

Inspired by the film process Technicolor used from 1922 - 1952. It's popularity grew from it's hyper realism and saturated levels of colour. This was used in such films as The Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain and Snow White. For more information on the process head HERE.

This would be a great week to experiment with slide film, cross processing or in photoshop if you are working digitally. Alternatively you could create a technicolor scene to photograph without external aids!

Week 3 - Never Stop Dreaming - 15 - 21 October 2009

Cultural Niagara Dance

This idea was based on how films provide us with inspiration in life and can be so uplifting that they hold a special place in our hearts and allow us to dream. I know many many films have done this for me and I hope to always hold to the ideas and never stop dreaming and being inspired.

This week is a broader theme and can be taken in many ways. I am imagining sleeping dreaming portraits as well as fiercely determined imagery. Where will you take it?

Week 4 - Film Noir - 22 - 28 October 2009

Double Indemnity

This is inspired by those dark, mysterious, curtains, shadows and smoke! These Hollywood crime dramas were popular in the 1940's and 1950's but this style has continued to be reproduced through the years with elements in major movies such as Mullholland Drive, Brick, Sin City, the list goes on!

When I think of Film Noir Double Indemnity is prominent in my mind from back when I was studying Film at university....the old backstabbing tale of lies and deception...classic!

This week should be a fun one, full of drama and recreating images that are reflective of this mood and aesthetic.

For more a lot on the genre head HERE for further inspiration.

As predicted I found two more things that Amelie has broken! A little book I got in England and a black and brown beaded bracelet that I made a few years ago!

'The Littlest Book in England' just got a little smaller.

Amelie Broke This - Beaded Bracelet - I am not sure if we found all the beads yet!

I have also been trying to get more crafting done....I finally finished my laptop cover for my new laptop - it is Snow White fabric from Retro Mummy and matches the Snow White Decal I just added!! There is also a stitchery I finally finished from the Craft Bar at the Stitches and Craft Show - it is for my husband and now hangs in his workroom.

Sexy Librarian Stitchery from Sublime Stitching - I started it at the Stitches and Craft Show and finished it this weekend.

26 September 2009 Daily Inspiration

For this week of opposite I have decided to shoot things around the house that Amelie has broken to show the other side of the poor object that she destroys (mostly accidentally).

Saddest of all was Friday night when she accidently smashed my snow globe from New York City. I got it on my journeys in 2005 when I was traveling the world by myself. It meant a lot to me but I loved playing with Amelie and the globes she got so excited to see the 'now' (snow). It rolled off the dresser after she put it back upside down. I just had enough time to snatch Amelie out of the way before it smashed on the ground. I reassure myself by thinking that I saved the more precious one! Plus now I will have to head back to NYC to get another globe!! How exciting!

It no longer snows in New York City

Amelie Broke Me - Basket used for the Flower Girl our Wedding!

Amelie still loves to carry around the broken basket but is a little confused to why it doesn't work right!

I will have to find two other things that she has broken...this should not be a hard endeavor!

I hope you are enjoying shooting this week....I will be announcing the prize for August this week and I am very excited about this one!!! I look forward to seeing all your work!

Nicholas Nixon

Opposing Forces

A master of the large format black and white photograph Nicholas Nixon's work presents us with a social commentary that covers a range of contrasting situations. The three images I have chosen show a contrast in skin textures and relationships. I also love the theme of opposites seen in the feet and head shot!
Beautiful work! If you want to explore much more check out the Fraenkel Gallery website.

The Amazing Photography of David Sykes

Light Breakfast

Spaghetti Hoops

These photographs have been doing the rounds on a couple of blogs I follow HERE and HERE.
&
I love the contrast in the sizing and thought it would be a perfect example of bringing opposing sizing together to create a spectacular image. I love the ideas behind them both and think about how I would love to come up with something just as amazing for my work! I also love how he had the enormous plate specially made for the work!
&
David's work is largely commercial and he has come up with some amazing ad campaigns. I am currently putting on my thinking cap and trying to come up with something equally as awesome!
&
I am also currently a bit stumped by the Canon EOS Photo 5 Compeition - is any one else entering?? How are you finding it??

See more of David's portfolio HERE and blog HERE.

I photographed my backyard this morning with the Orange Glow of the Sydney dust storm. In opposition to this image is one that I shot for the theme Morning and Evenings not too long ago. I am quite happy that I got almost the same angle as I wasn't thinking about it when I shot the photo this morning. Anyway today seems like an upside down day in Sydney-town so I thought it was perfect!

Evening

Check out more images of the dust storm on Amy Gunson's group The Red Sydney Project - Dust Storm Days on Flickr. She also has an awesome BLOG if you are interested!

Welcome to a week of OPPOSITES!!

Today's inspiration comes from the photographer Bobby Neel Adams. His series Age Maps combines new photos with childhood photos to show the similarities, differences and aging through the years. I love the idea and the resulting images are amazing.

My Letters

This weekend we went to Cooma to visit our family. We had a lovely time and Amelie especially loved playing the piano at Carmel and Jim's house! These images show the piano and the keys which have been labelled to help the children learn the piano. I love using natural light and it was a lovely day for that!

A reminder to load your photos ASAP by tonight (9pm AEST) and you could be this weeks featured contributor!! Go on.....do it!!

Letters

I was very excited when I remembered that this weeks theme is LETTERS.

There are a wealth of ideas that have already flooded my mind.....vintage love letters, letter magnets that we had on the fridge when we were kids, scrabble letters, baby's letter blocks, typewriters and designer letters that I see furnishing people's homes these days - I love them all and I can't wait to explore it this week!

Today's inspiration comes from the blog DESIGN SPONGE. In searching their blog I found some beautiful images they have collected that fit the theme. My favourite is the wax seal, we received one as a gift with my and my husband's initials and I have been waiting for a perfect time to use it...the time may have come!

Happy Shooting!!

Interesting Tales....
