Vintage Sheet Hexagon Quilt

At the end of last year I embarked on my first hexie project. I pulled out my stash of vintage sheet fat quarters I collected from the swap and cut 4 x 4" squares of each print. With no clear direction in mind I set to making a whole bunch of hexies using a 3" template found HERE!

The hexies grew and grew until I had the final count - 525 hexagons!

I still wasn't sure what to make with the hexies but with some encouragement I decided to throw them all in and make a rainbow hexie quilt!

It slowly grew and grew and got too big to take with me on the train and to work (where I did most of my stitching), so I ended up making it in 4 segments that I joined together at the end.

Once joined together I began the tedious process of taking out the paper! This shot above is the backing after a long day of taking out all the hexie papers!

When it was time to quilt I was tempted to hand quilt, but ended up going with simple lines of machine quilting so it could showcase the vintage sheets!

For the binding I cut strips of sheets to match the sides and stitched them together.

I can't believe it's finally done! In the end I used 500 3 inch hexies in 20x25 rows measuring 51" by 55". I am in love with this quilt and so far have no other plans for it than to hug it a few times a day!

All up it took 11 weeks from my first hexie to the finish. As I am currently working full time I used my commute and lunch breaks to make and join most of the hexies...and some nights after the kids were in bed!

For the backing I used this amazing NEW vintage sheet fresh out of the packet that my fellow vintage sheet lover Katie found for me! Check out her blog for some amazing vintage sheet quilts!

Now the quilt is nestled with my collection of quilts made on a whim...the best kind!

  4. Oh, this is gorgeous. I have never done a hexie quilt because I dread the process of removing the papers. I have a huge stash of vintage sheets tho and haven't yet decided what to make with them. Other than two throw pillows that I made last spring. Your quilt is gorgeous though!!
